Vermintide 2 is the sequel of Warhammer – End Times: Vermintide which was received with mixed views but had great potential. Read further on to see if they have managed to fix this with Warhammer: Vermintide 2.
Vermintide 2 plays of in the Warhammer universe as can be deduced by the name. The timeline is in the early days of the End Times. You will play as Heroes of Ubersreik, battling against hordes of Skaven and decaying Chaos. There are two main clans that you will battle from these races, Clan Fester and Rotbloods. It is fitting that they chose these clans and also time period as it fits the genre of the game perfectly.
The first thing to understand is that the game is intended to be played as a 4 player co-op. You can play it as a single player game with bots as your allies but it will not always have the desired outcome. Usually games like this put me off but I have to say that the online community for this game is great. Everyone is willing to put the effort in to beat a mission and reap the rewards.
There are 5 characters/classes to choose from each with their unique skills, abilities and weapons. What’s great is that each character then has 2 variants that you can unlock, this is called careers. These careers can be quite different from the original so can almost be seen as a completely different character/class. This basically offers you 15 different characters/classes to play with which is insanely awesome.
This feature almost makeup for the weak reward system in terms of loot boxes. After every successful mission you get rewarded with a loot box, which sometimes can feel redundant. The weapons can be dull, and you might get the same weapon over and over. Luckily the game has a great crafting system and you can break down unwanted items into materials required for crafting.
The loot boxed can also be “upgraded” to obtain better loot by finding hidden tomes on the stages and carrying them instead of a health potion to the end. There are two grimoire books as well to obtain and they even lower the health of your party. This is a good risk/reward system to add some flavour to missions.
There are 13 base missions to play and they look great even though the base outlay is the same they are different n smaller broken up paths and obstacles. There are puzzles and smaller goals to keep you busy throughout the mission and then there is a final goal to complete which can vary from fighting off an Elite enemy or solving a puzzle while being flanked.Warhammer: Vermintide 2 is a great hack ‘n slash game with some great progression elements. Even though the loot system is weak it is boosted by having great weapons and a good crafting system. A great game to have in your library and a must for Warhammer fans. This is definitely a step up from the first release.
