Set in the not too distant future Mae Holland played by Emma Watson is recommended for job at a Social Media company. Seeing the company is trying to emulate a hybrid of the Google and Facebook offices she is reluctant to accept the job but finally giving in to her friends’ enthusiasm, she lands the job some would consider an opportunity of a lifetime and leaves rural life behind.

Her work slowly becomes her life as she is absorbed into the powerful technology and social media company culture. Encouraged by the company’s founder played by Tom Hanks, Mae joins a groundbreaking experiment that pushes the boundaries of privacy, ethics and personal freedom. Her participation in the experiment, and every decision she makes soon starts to affect the lives and futures of her friends, family and that of humanity.

The story conveys strong messages about social media and its impact on society, while Mae’s life becomes more connected and exposed to the public in the short term it eventually has the opposite effect by isolating her even further from her family and friends. The empty career success, support and fame she achieves becomes a personal prison guiding her life towards demise as she struggles to get free. The movie tries to provide warnings of the trajectory of social media and use of technology but without pushing the envelope too far. It does become predictable and generic in its attempts to portray the dangers of hyper-interconnectivity and transparency.
