Mario and friends return in Super Mario Party and this time everyone is battling it out to be the ultimate Super Star. The Mario Party series is now sitting on 11 main titles and 5 handheld versions. The aim of this series was to have a party, and this is exactly what these games achieve. I was really excited for the Switch version and could not wait to get started.

On a Sunday, my Wife and I decided to start the new Super Mario Party on the Nintendo Switch. Little did we know that 6 hours later we would still be playing and wanting to play more and this was only with the first time we tried it. I have played three of the previous versions in the series and enjoyed them all, but I do not think that I have enjoyed one of them as much as this release. For me the Switch just scream easy co-op play or party play, so it is really the perfect platform for this series.

The roster of playable characters is huge from Mario, Luigi, Rosalina, Dry Bones, Boo, Koopa Troopa, Hammer Bro, Princess Peach, Princess Daisy, Yoshi, Donkey Kong, Shy Guy, Bowser, Wario, and Waluigi who are returning characters to Diddy Kong, Bowser Jr., Pom Pom, Goomba and Monty Mole who are new additions. It is an incredible list of playable characters and each has their own unique set of die to throw apart from the standard.

A new River Party mode called River Survival has been introduced, where instead of playing a boardgame like field you traverse down a river as a team in a raft boat. You need to work as a team and paddle your way through and past obstacles in your way and also try to collect coins or pop balloons to initiate minigames for further coin collecting. There are other modes to still discover as well and you can also play online modes which is quite cool.

Super Mario Party has loads to offer and it feels like the most loaded in the series yet with tons of different modes, minigames and characters to choose from. I can’t wait to have some more friends over to enjoy this game.
