One of the most anticipated titles to come out this year for the Nintendo Switch is definitely Super Mario Odyssey. Play Mario in a whole new way and in my opinion, in a full proper 3D environment for the first time.

In Super Mario Odyssey, Bowser is up to his old tricks again. Kidnapping Princess Peach and trying to marry her. In the battle that takes place in the intro, Bowser destroys Mario’s hat and he gets dropped into a mysterious hat kingdom. Here is where Mario meets Cappy, a morphing hat that becomes Mario’s new companion and hat. With his new companion, they set off and travel across different Kingdoms to try and rescue Princess Peach and restore the chaos that Bowser creates along his route.

Cappy gives Mario new abilities that he never had before, so apart from his super jump he now has some cool tricks up his sleeve. Cappy can be thrown at enemies and even be used to become certain objects and characters to control. All these new abilities create so much more for Mario to do and accomplish and makes for a brand-new way to play Mario.

The game opens up in a free-roam exploration which we have seen before in Super Mario Sunshine and 64 but in Super Mario Odyssey it feels like a lot more freedom and options available. The game support all the ways you can play on the Nintendo Switch console, tablet, TV and table top mode is all a great way to play the game but they do suggest that you play with the Joy-Cons separate in your hands. The game also supports local Co-Op, the second players takes control of Cappy and can then attack enemies freely from Mario.

Super Mario Odyssey looks amazing on the Nintendo Switch system in all HD glory and in any mode, it does look on par. They stuck to the theme of the Mario games but it is great to see them branching out and using different themes and graphics in the different kingdoms you visit.

There is a lot of surprises in Super Mario Odyssey and it is probably one of the most innovative Mario games that I have seen in the last 10 years. I’m thoroughly enjoying the game and I would’ve probably bought a Nintendo Switch just for this if I had to.
