Sonic makes his return with a brand-new game, not a remaster but something brand new! Doctor Eggman has taken over the world, he beat Sonic with the newest villain to join his team, Infinite. Can Sonic and his team take the world back from Doctor Eggman?
The game style is a mix of the old and the new with the old Sonic side scrolling levels available and a newer modern 3D gameplay. You can say that it is very similar to Sonic Generations, but the game has something that no Sonic game has ever had… Character Creation, yes you can create your own character and it has quite a bit of options available as well. Not only do you just create the look but choosing what type of animal you are effects what special abilities you have. As you play through levels you also unlock equipment for your character.
To give your Avatar an extra boost, you have a grappling hook that allows you to reach places like never before and perform homing attacks. Your character can also equip weapons that you have unlocked called Wispons, some of these include Flamethrowers, hammers or burst wisp. These can be used strategically in levels to give you an added advantage.
Some stages have to be played by a certain character and your Avatar can not be used, at the stage where you can use your Avatar, you also have the choice to rent someone else’s Avatar for the stage. The different stage looks awesome but some of them can feel a bit unfair with some tricky traps and moment where you feel that you cannot get past them without getting hurt or dying. After completing a stage, you get scored and ranked for that stage depending on rings collected, time to complete etc.
Sonic has always been a fast-paced game and one of the aims has always been to see how quick a stage can be completed. Although this is great for side scroller, it feels a little different for 3D gameplay, you feel the need to explore and see what you can find so here it can feel a bit rushed. Especially when you are chasing a certain stage rank.
Sonic Forces for me is a step in the right direction, I definitely like that I can create my own Avatar. There is a lot of hope for Sonic in the future with a title like this, and fans should feel happy with this release. With that said I think there is a lot of work ahead of Sonic Team.
