“If you think a keyboard with all the essentials couldn’t get better—think again. With the Razer Cynosa Chroma, we kept the necessities and amped it up with features.” – Razer Team

Quite a bold statement from the team at Razer, lets see if it holds any water…

I recently received the Razer Cynosa Chroma to review. As usual the box looked pretty epic from the outside, adorned with bright green and colourful images as one would expect from Razer. Initial setup was pretty easy, after plugging the keyboard on I was prompted to download the Razer Synapse software.

The moment I connected the keyboard I was met with a lovely rainbow glow from under the keys. Once the Razer Synapse was set up I started customizing the colours. True to Razer’s words, every single key colour could be altered to any colour I could possibly think of. You can even set the keys up in such a way that different keystrokes produce different colours. To be honest I feel the lights are a little gimmicky, but love them or hate them, Razer has done a good job in the lighting department.

The general feel of the key strokes feel good, almost mechanical, but not quite. I still need to decide if I like that or not.

One thing I do miss are some dedicated media keys, yes there are volume buttons, but they share the same space as the F-keys, so reaching for the function button before adjusting the volume is a skill you would need to acquire before barging into a game of PUBG, headset ablaze. With that said, the keyboard is marketed as a skinny version with the essentials included, but at the price point I kind of expected more.

To conclude, the Razer Cynosa Chroma is yet another great quality product from Razer, but I do feel it is a little expensive considering the features that are included. I miss dedicated media keys and the texture on the keys lends itself to fingerprint marks and it feels like they will become glossy over time.
