From mystical powerhouses to expert gunslingers and supportive healers, each Freegunner offers unique skills, personalities, and abilities that cater to a variety of playstyles.
With Crew Builder, you can create custom squads of Freegunners, bringing a mix of roles to the match or focusing on your favorite characters to master their gameplay. Unlock unique modifiers, cosmetics, background lore, and more as you decide when to play your characters and how to impact the match.
Initially seen as a potential Overwatch replacement, Concord faced challenges due to limited advertising and a high price point, making it difficult to gain traction on Steam. This resulted in it being the 147th most played game on PlayStation during its release week, with fewer than 700 concurrent players and only 25,000 copies sold.
Despite these setbacks, Concord is a fantastic FPS game with modern graphics and well-developed character personalities. I was immediately drawn to the design of 1-Off and chose them as my main character.
The audio team excelled in creating voice lines and character personalities, and importantly, in making it easy to identify the direction of footsteps and other noises from both friendly and enemy players.
While there is no traditional campaign, the story involves being recruited into the Freegunners and playing through various game modes. As you level up, you unlock lore through a planetary system.
For solo players, there are training, tutorial, and time trial modes. The fun begins with Team Deathmatches, which are casual, followed by objective-based games with unlimited respawns. After reaching a certain level, you can access a more competitive mode where you need to create a lineup with no respawns. Winning a round locks that character for the rest of the game, which is why I have three 1-Offs in my lineup.
Characters provide unique boosts and buffs, such as increased healing rates, range, and reload speed. To play the game seriously, you’ll need to figure out these buffs, as you can’t always afford to cycle through seven characters to get all the buffs before trying to win.
The game features a battle pass and only sells cosmetics, so there are no pay-to-win strategies. The game feels well-balanced, even with a 180ms ping, which feels like 60ms—a huge bonus for the South African community to showcase their skills.
Unfortunately, the game’s high price and lack of advertising hinder its potential. Without more players, the game struggles, and waiting 15 minutes in a queue is not ideal.
