The Vikings invade the Switch with Niffelheim released on the console. Choose your brave warrior and take on the world.
We’ve reviewed NIffelheim before, which you can see here, but I was very eager to try it on the Switch. Niffelheim ended up something very different than what I expected in a positive way. I found the type of game style to be quite fresh in the idea of combining a side scroller with survival and RPG elements.
I love Norse mythology and found it quite hard to decide which character I wanted to start with, so I begin with the straight-forward Viking. The learning aspect is a bit weak as you are left mostly to figure things out for yourself, there are tons of guides for you to go through but no tutorial in a sense. Soon after starting I found my character being hungry and ventured off in search of food. Soon enough I found some resources and were able to build the first level of kitchen to prepare some food for my character. The food did not do much to ease the hunger and tried to stockpile a lot of food so I can start hunting for other resources to further expand my home.
The game mechanics all work well together and found that I wanted to explore more and play for longer to build and find more stuff than what I expected. The different worlds that you can choose in the beginning each brings along their own challenges and further enhances the gameplay. Crafting, looting and battles are endless and the progression of your character leaves you with a sense of accomplishment. The graphics also do the game great justice in some awesome hand painted images.
It is also great that the game support online Co-Op and cross platform multiplayer. I didn’t dive much into that but form what I can see it looks like it can be fun. The game will eat away at your game time, after doing a dungeon run you can easily realize that it is a few hours later which is always a good sign for a game.
Read the comparative review of Niffelheim in the link above to see what one of our other Reviewers thought of the game initially but for me it is something quite fresh and different and I think I like it ;p A lot of time we as gamers get bombarded with the same style of games which can be cool. I really like it when developers try something new and fresh, sometimes it does not pay off but when it does it is magic and it might not be perfect but no game or game style was ever perfect from the start.
