Mortal Kombat X has finally been released, NetherRealm Studios has once again brought out an Outstanding fighting game to sink our teeth in with Fatalities galore and Brutalities make their return.
Mortal Kombat X takes place right after where 9 ended but this story spans over 20 years. A lot of new faces gets introduced and some old ones make their return. As with 9, Mortal Kombat X’s story is deep and intriguing, they have added some QTE actions while cinematic sequences are playing and in a way that it doesn’t make you hate the actions. During the story some of your favourite characters might get killed but does this mean that this will be the last MK game that they feature in? We will just have to wait and see.
There are tons of modes in Mortal Kombat X from single player modes to online and let’s not forget the new Factions mode, everything will keep you busy. The Krypt has been fully revamped and now you actually walk around breaking open the objects, as with the previous there are different sections like the graveyard and spider caverns. Don’t be to relaxed as you might get jumped by some creature activating a QTE action and upon success you will get some “Koins” as a reward. Throughout the Krypt you will come upon some items of fighters like Raidens staff, you will then collect this and use it at some points to proceed or unlock different sections of the Krypt. There are a total of 11 items to collect so be sure not to miss any.
The towers have been changed a bit where you get different kinds now, like the living tower which will change every now and then or the test your luck tower which will generate random buffs and de-buffs for every fight, these will challenge you in new ways and push you to become a better player. King of the Hill in Online has been much improved as well it feels a lot smoother and the voting system work great.
The new factions mode is really interesting. When you start Mortal Kombat X for the first time it will ask you to choose between 4 factions, each has a little intro explaining what the faction stands for and you can change factions at a later stage. Every thing you do will reward your faction points and every week there will be a faction winner and that faction will gain rewards, in the faction menu you can fight an incredibly hard Faction invasion Boss and also try and beat the Faction invasion Tower. This adds a whole new dynamic to the game and I’m thoroughly enjoying this.
Now to the really fun stuff that make Mortal Kombat stand out from the rest, the characters and fatalities. Each character has tons of costumes for you to unlock and with more characters going to become available soon as DLC the roster is ever growing. Each fighter also has three variations, each variation change the fighting style of the character and also adds some different abilities. This is fun to explore and to see which variations will work best for your play style. As always when you pause the game you can look at the moves list for the character you are playing as, but a great feature that they added is that you can favourite a move and also let it show under the health bars while playing, this is great as know you can “tag” that Fatality move in the beginning of the match and you don’t have to quickly pause the game when “Finish Him/Her” pops up.
Fatalities are a big thing in Mortal Kombat and in Mortal Kombat X Brutalities have returned. In the move list you will see information on how to perform Brutalities (if you have unlocked them all in the Krypt) and as before Brutalities have to be performed before depleting the opponents health. Some of them might be tricky to perform successfully but the reward is great. The Fatalities are as gruesome as always and you can see that they have put a lot of thought into it. You now also get Faction kills that you can perform, these are easy to do and also makes for a great addition to the finishers. I was hoping that they would surprise us with another -atality but maybe we will see some extra stuff coming through as DLC.
I created this videos from a few fights I did, so you can see how great this game is and for any fan you can not miss out on this game!
Mortal Kombat X has brought some great new stuff to the Fighter genre and will defenitely make a big scene in the E-Sport industry. I will be playing this game for a long time and cannot wait to put my skills to the test against some of my friends!
