You’ve seen the success of Tsukihime, and then Kagetsu Tohya. Now comes an even better, more in-depth story than before. There have been new murders in Misaki Town, much like the ones in Tsukihime, and it’s up to Shiki Tohno to find out what is going on.
Melty Blood: Actress Again Current Code is a game developed by Type-Moon, the same developers who brought us Tsukihime (Lunar Princess) and Kagetsu Tohya (Ten Nights of the Singing Moon). These games are visual novel, fighting genres, and the same can be said for Melty Blood, as it follows on a few days after the events of Kagetsu Tohya. The main male protagonist, Shiki Tohno, must uncover the cause of murders in his town, and take down the murderer. He then encounters Sion Eltnam Atlasia who tries to reason with him to stay away from the case and initiates a fight with him to capture him. After the fight, she reveals that the reason she wants to capture him is to draw out the “True Ancestor”, to discover a cure for vampirism. Shiki then agrees to help her in her mission.
The story progresses through a series of fights against other characters, and depending on the outcome of the fight, the story will branch out in one of two ways, which fits in to the ending of the game. The controls are pretty simple to understand but difficult to carry out at first. Instead of a tutorial, the game has the combo abilities listed on the side of the screen, which can be used as easy reference. It is recommended to play with a console controller, as the respective commands are listed in this format. It is however possible to play using a keyboard, and if you are able to figure out the commands on the keyboard, then you should be able to progress in the game fine.
There are 31 playable characters, each with their own storyline that spans over multiple fights. There is even a Steam achievement for completing all the playable characters’ storylines, called “Nobody told me the lore is THIS big!” (Well done to you Type Moon). There is a Practice Mode where you can play as any of the playable characters, against a very docile NPC which will continuously regenerate health as you beat him/her to a pulp while practicing your button mashing skills!
There are also Multiplayer modes, namely Versus and Network Mode. The former allows you to play locally against players, or against a CPU Character (which will fight back this time), and the latter option allows you to play online. I attempted to play online, but because of the wonderful internet in South Africa, I was unable to get very far, but I resorted to trying out the Versus mode with a friend, which I imagine would be very much the same as Network Mode, and I had a decent amount of fun.
Having not been familiar with the title and its storyline, I was unsure at first, but after doing a little research into the plot and figuring out the controls, the game is pretty darn fun. I am a big fan of manga and anime, and this game has piqued my interest into the manga and anime series, but I digress. MELTY BLOOD Actress Again Current Code is a unique anime fighter-style game, and I enjoyed the journey it took me on. The amount of playable characters were however a bit overwhelming, but I am certain it would be heaven for fans of the series.
