Back in the days of Nintendo NES(in SA known as the famous Golden China) you had awesome platformers like Contra, Metroid, and 90’s bullet hell games like Batsugun and Radiant Silvergun(I miss games like that), well the guys over at Housemarque got me(and hopefully you) sorted in that department with a little game called Matterfall!

Matterfall is a combination of 2D platformer and bullet hell mechanics (the intro gave it away right?). Housemarque has a track record of making awesome platformers and bull hell games (Alienation, Resogun etc) and they really combined it perfectly in this game. The game takes a bit of skill to master, but as soon as you get the controls right you shoot, dash and fly through the levels. The one thing I found with the controls was that it might be better to actually play it on an arcade stick as you have more buttons to use while you play Matterfall. The levels can also take a few tries to get through as you have to think a little in advance on how you going to play.

If you have a PS4 Pro you can look forward to HDR graphics, Native 4K support and a constant 60fps in gameplay. On a normal PS4, I can say the visuals are awesome! As you play you get augmentations that make your health last longer and your bullets make more hell for the infected Robot scum that has taken over the City. In total there are 12 Augmentations that you can try to unlock. They really did a great job with the soundtrack of the game, it has got the right beats to get your heart pumping when you playing Matterfall(if you pre-ordered the game you could actually get the Soundtrack as a bonus).

Now Matterfall only has 12 levels, this might seem short but the game is really intense and I personally won’t be able to take more levels. This might put off some guys that want levels and levels, but I think it is just enough. The one thing I hope Housemarque would bring in, later on, is maybe two player co-op(maybe if they do a remastered edition or so).

Overall I was really pleased with the game. Matterfall will make you want to go back and try it again and again. It has awesome graphics, sound and the levels will keep you busy for a long time(on all three difficulties). You might get some carpel tunnel from smashing the button, but it would be worth it. I would recommend this to any gamer that loves Platformers and bullet hell games, even to casual gamer sort of. This is your local mad scientist signing out…I came here to shoot robots and chew bubblegum, and I am all out of gum

Likes

  • Feels like the old days with Contra on the NES….just with way better sound and graphics
  • The soundtrack for the game makes you want to go faster(even if it’s not good for your health).
  • It is also very addictive!

Dislikes

  • Not really a dislike more a wish, is if they added local 2 player
  • I feel that you need an arcade stick controller to play the game way better.
