We have been waiting for 5 years, now the time has come, to again, meet with Kratos and lets face it… beat everything to a pulp.
Finally, “God of War is out”! Yes, it has been a long wait and there is a lot that is different; so the question remains, is it worth it and will we enjoy it. I’ve been playing for about 10 hours and I can answer a definite – YES – to both those questions.
The story is gripping, and it feel like you are playing a movie, the gameplay moves fluidly from one cutscene to another and then back to the gameplay without skipping a beat. This is thanks to the one-shot camera technique that they used for “God of War”, which some can argue is limited or can become very tricky; but, in this case, it works. The technique delivers an incredibly strong story and just keeps you drawn to the screen. Just think about it a bit, no loading screen, no blank screens, no gitters or glitches and no graphic differences. Now this is how you play a story mode.
Every step so far, I have been in awe; the story speaks for itself, especially the bond between Atreus and Kratos. The equipment management system has gone a step further than the normal action game and the same goes for the skills and crafting. It is not yet on an RPG genre level, but it is getting better.
It feels great to become Kratos again and diving into a new mythology, which at first did not make any sense; but as you progress through the game it becomes clearer. The Norse mythology ties in exquisitely with the saga as a next step and it is somewhat refreshing to see someone take on this mythology in a remarkable story driven game.
This is definitely a game that I am going to complete and will be playing as much as I can. This is the best game I have played this year and so far, the best game of 2018. Other games being released this year truly have their work cut out for them.
