A full live-action interactive thriller, this is ERICA. A game that puts you in control of basically a movie.
ERICA is an interactive movie that you play, you choose the outcome and decide how the story flows. It is a cool concept and for only R159 it is cheaper than going to the movies with someone. The story is about Erica, a young girl that is haunted by her past of when her father was murdered. The murder was never solved and even though Erica was present when the murder happened, her memories are foggy of what exactly happened. Years later this is still haunting er and now it looks like someone is after her. Now she gets pulled into her parents’ old lives where her father was one of the founding members of Delphi house.
When you start the game you get very little to go on for the story, so the above gives you a bit of a base to go on. The story unfolds as you play but is a bit slow in the beginning. Choosing the directions on how the story goes is quite daunting and at time you might not even have enough time to look at all the options before you need to choose which way to go. This is to keep the pace alive and the pressure on you but some more time would be cool to choose. The story is not to long, it took us just over 2 hours to do the first play through and it was cool to play this alongside my Wife.
You can play the game/movie with the controller using the touchpad or you can download the companion app on your phone which is recommended. Both options work great and we only had one or two incidents where the companion app disconnected.
The graphics looks great as it is live-action and it support 4K as well which will give you a great interactive movie experience. The soundtrack adds to the drama of the scenes and is composed by Austin Wintory, who worked on games such as Journey, The Banner Saga 3 and Assassin’s Creed Syndicate.
ERICA is a cool interactive movie to experience, there are things that could’ve been done better but for the price it is well worth it. The value is that you can play it through a few times and experience different outcomes based on your choices. I hope we get more interactive movies/games like this to enjoy.
