Encased Review

Encased is a Kickstarter funded Tactical RPG which is set in an alternative 1970s where the Dome was discovered in a remote desert, create your character as either a Blue, White, Black, Orange or Silver Wing character and travel into the Dome to help uncover its mysteries.

Encased has taken me by surprise with the complexity one would not expect in a turn-based game as it involves a lot of your traditional RPG mechanics such as different types of armour, weapons and inventory to either sell or trade for something more useful.

The game starts with your application being accepted to go into the Dome which a lot of people believe is either an Ancient Artifact or Alien Artifact, once you arrive at the Dome You will be given your training and basic introduction to the controls of the game and possible encounters, shortly after you will be given your 1st mission as one of the CRONUS Wings, but as any game do not expect to arrive by your destination without any issues along the road.

Depending on your specialities and Wing assignment you will have different responses when communicating to NPCs, some decisions mean more than what you expect at that exact time and might end up having your fighter with bandits to rob a petrol station, these type of turn-based fighting involves more than just your decision making and weapon, as you can cycle in between weapons, use your remaining points to get additional defensive points to prevent damage, or reload your weapon.

As you complete quests and win encounters you will receive XP of which you can increase certain attributes or unlock abilities, You also get to choose your race, abilities and attributes of your character before you start the game filled with Difficult choices and even more difficult encounters where each answer and move means the difference in victory, defeat, survival or death, a really complex game set to challenge even the most hardcore of Tactical RPG Gamers.

Final Thoughts: With such a complex and attention to detail game such as this it would be appreciated by some and frowned upon by others, being able to join different wings and have answers meaning different outcomes for encounters will leave gamers wanted to play the game several times to see all the different possibilities, encounters can become quite a time consuming with high concentration, but you are rewarded with great graphics that Dark Crystal Games has provided us with

Good

  • Great Graphics for a game funded by Kickstarter
  • Game has both RPG and turn based elements mixed into one, giving it a unique feel

Bad

  • You can get lost if you do not pay attention to the dialogs
  • Quest log does not really give you a clear indication of what to do next
  • Game might be too difficult for the casual player to enjoy

Lover of MOBAs and FPS type games, very competitive type player who enjoys games that also has some complexity added to them, would spend hours on end farming on a game such as Warframe, BDO, Elite Dangerous or any other game in that line.
