Days Gone is one of the most intriguing and unexpected games I have played in 2019 so far, it caught me off-guard like a backhand to the head. What an amazing experience this was.
The new PS4 exclusive Days Gone was a game that some saw coming, and others didn’t. I was one the gamers that didn’t have this on my radar so did not know what to expect and I was happily surprise of how awesome the game is.
Days Gone is an open world action adventure where you play as Deacon St. John, a bounty hunter trying to survive in this new world while searching for his reason to live. I won’t spoil the gripping story any further as it is full of twists and turns from every corner.
The game makes you feel like you are living in The Walking Dead world and this is what the game should’ve been like. There are dangers everywhere, other Humans, Animals and Freakers! Freakers are what they call zombies and there are some different types as well each with some unique features and strengths. On the human front you get the Rippers, an extremist group that burns and cuts everything and has no regard for anyone that does not believe in their cause. You get some friendly humans as well, mainly with camps that you visit. You can do some work for these camps that I will cover later. Animals also roam freely and often you will encounter wolfs and bears that want to tear you apart.
As you roam throughout the open world on your bike you will encounter human camps, the camps differ in the way they treat the people and their goals they want to achieve also is quite different form each other. The camps will ask you do to some quests/runs for them in return they give you camp credits and you gain trust level. The credits can be used to improve and upgrade your bike, repair it and refuel. It can also be used to and buy weapons and ammo.
Ammo and Fuel are rare commodities and yes, your bike needs fuel to roam around. If you run out on your way to a place you will have to either push your bike the rest of the way or leave it and come back with fuel in hand. Throughout the world you will also gather tons of resources like animal meat, scrap, plants, rags, bandage, bottles and more. Scrap is used in many ways, you can use it to repair melee weapons, fix your bike and some other crafting. Crafting can assist you a lot in sticky situations so always make sure you have enough materials on hand.
The game looks beautiful, I had some minor glitches here and there but non drastic enough to spoil my experience. The initial loading can take a while, but I believe on the Pro console it will be a bit better. If the graphics are this good on the normal PS4 then I can only imagine how it must look on the Pro. Another great feature in terms of look is the dynamic weather, rain can start pouring down at any time and the Freakers behaviour also gets influenced by the time of day.
Days Gone lives up to another great PlayStation exclusive game and is definitely one of the best PS4 game for this year so far. A great must have for anyone looking for a Single Player adventure they can sink their teeth and time into.
