Spring (and summer) has finally sprung and we are so ready for the warmer weather, and spending time outdoors, right?? Our Spring Cosplayer of the Month is Cywiel Cosplay, and she has been so awesome to make space in her busy rAge Expo prep schedule to tell us a bit more about herself, and her cosplay journey so far….

Hi there Lynette! Tell us a bit more about the person behind the cosplay persona?

I am a vegetarian and I really love animals. I also studied fine arts at university.

How and when did you get started in Cosplay and why do you enjoy it?

I always loved dressing up for Halloween or any occasion for that matter. But someone introduced me to the craft and I fell in love.

Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of cosplaying? If yes, please tell us more about it

I am part of a book club but I had to put it on hold for the convention

What was the first Costume you wore for Cosplay and did you make it yourself?

Misaki Mei from the anime ‘Another’

I made the entire costume myself and I was so proud of it even if I was such a noob. The jacket had major sleeve issues. But I was just too excited to be at a con in a self-made cosplay. ”

What type of genre is your favorite to Cosplay, and why?

I do not necessarily have a genre that I favour. I would say that I do prefer to cosplay stronger females with a darker side.

Every Cosplayer has a favourite part of creating a costume or something they are really good at, what is yours?

I enjoy making all the parts of a costume and I like all different styles and applications that I get to experiment with. I do not enjoy sanding down and priming the parts as much though

What is your most difficult challenge in creating a costume?

The part that I find the most challenging when creating a costume is definitely getting started. Sometimes I over analyse how to make the patterns. I have only bought one pattern in my life.

We all know that cosplay has been become a very expensive hobby these days, do you have hints or tips for other cosplayers as far as cutting down expenses etc are concerned?

It really is an expensive hobby and I wish I had great advice but the thing that works for me is to take good care of my equipment. Storing away the tools and cleaning up your brushes does save you on your material at least and you will not easily misplace it.

Tell us about your most epic fail ever whilst creating a costume

I was trying to get some last minute work done and cut my hand. It bled all over my dress. Sufficed to say I never went to the con.

Which character do you consider to be your Holy Grail of cosplays?

Blood Rayne – She was always my heroine

What is the one thing that you try and avoid when making a new costume?

I avoid making a costume of a character I do not like as much.

Costume crafting can be really hard sometimes, right? Do you have any scars from cosplay related injuries and how did you get them?

Yes… I have a heat gun burn and a few cuts

I am crazy about Domino

Your weapon of choice in a zombie apocalypse if you can choose between a Sonic Screwdriver or Light Sabre?

Light sabre

Why is this your weapon of choice?

I have one and hopefully I can learn how to use it to defend myself
