Our featured Cosplayer this month is Martinique from Misfit Cosplay. Martinique is a successful cake decorator and she is known for her colorful full body paint cosplays. Let’s find out a bit more about her and interesting cosplay choices….

Hiya Martinique! Tell us a bit more about the lady behind the cosplay persona?

Well I’m a mom (of the ginja ninja) and a full time cake decorator. Huge fan of Dr. Who, Steven Universe, Harry Potter, Marvel, Supernatural, Star wars and Sherlock… Proud Hufflepuff :)

How and when did you get started in Cosplay and why do you enjoy it?

Cindy Du Preez actually got me started on my journey. I started about 4 years ago. I love cosplaying because I love sewing and honestly spending time with friends is what keeps me doing it. I really love that cosplay teaches skill sets that Vincent (the ginja ninja) can benefit from

Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of cosplaying?

Does reading count?

What was the first Costume you wore for Cosplay and did you make it yourself?

The first costume I wore was a lady Hobbit… I made the skirt, cape and brooch

What is the one thing that you try and avoid when making a new costume?

Procrastination… it doesn’t work

Next, your cosplay portfolio features a wide variety of cosplay characters. What type of genre is your favorite to Cosplay, and why?

Western pop, I’ve done 3 characters from Steven Universe… I find that western pop tends to have more plus size characters, while I believe you should cosplay any character you chose I like to stick with characters that share a similar body type (to me)

Every Cosplayer has a favourite part of creating a costume or something they are really good at, what is yours?

Body paint… I love being outrageous colors

What is your most difficult challenge in creating a costume?

I struggle with crafting the “armor” pieces

Do you have any “war stories” or scars from previous injuries that happened during crafting or constructing a new costume?

Many MANY many blisters from glue guns but nothing impressive

Which international con would you really love to go to and why?

Honestly, anywhere I can meet Misha Collins … because Misha

South Africa’s convention scene has been growing leaps and bounds over the last couple of years. Do you have any tips for the other cosplayers as to how to stay comfortable throughout the day?

Hydrate!! It’s so important and don’t forget to eat, it’s easy to get overwhelmed and forget then you pass out and there’s a big to-do… just eat and drink.

About Linda Jager

Linda Jager
I’m proudly Geek and have a passion for all things pop-culture. Huge fan of The Walking Dead. Lover of gadgets and technology and although I’m not a gamer (sadly no hand-eye co-ordination) I find myself drawn to the gaming culture and community and how it connects with one of my biggest passions – collecting action figures and statues. I love to watch movies and series and there’s nothing better than having conversations with other people about the things I feel so passionately about. Being an 80’s child I am a huge fan of retro stuff and my Thundercats collection is one of my most prized possessions. That, and my A-Team van. Follow me on Twitter @LindaAtGES
