Cosplayer Of The Month January 2016 | Kimiko

A very happy New Year to all our cosplayers and togs! We’ve got a feeling that this year is going to be amazing and to kickstart our Cosplayer Of The Month feature for 2016, we have the lovely Janél van Aswegen aka Kimiko up as our very COTM for January 2016. And to make things even more exciting, January is her birthday month, so please join us in wishing Janél happy birthday!!

Janél is known for her undying passion for everything Sailor Moon and we wanted to find out a bit more about the person behind the cosplays, as well as talk a bit about her cosplay adventures…

Tell us a bit more about the person/people behind the cosplay persona?

I am Kimi, as most of my friends call me. I’m a very hyper active person that enjoys reading manga and general novels and watching anime and Disney movies. I am pretty easy going and love making new friends, I’m an extrovert so I have no problem striking up a conversation with random people around me and I am overall fun loving ^_^

How and when did you get started in Cosplay and why do you enjoy it?

I started cosplaying back in 2012. I loved the idea of cosplay but didn’t think it existed SA until my friend Leigh (Corpsedoll Cosplay) showed me a group called Neko Cosplay RU and when I saw that others were doing it in SA as well and there were events I immediately got to get an outfit together.

I enjoy cosplay because I get to dress up in all sorts of cute and sparkly and fun outfits. Another huge plus is that I get to dress up like all my favourite characters.

Congratulations on placing 1st at the AIX Cosplay Competition with your skit!! Can you tell us a bit more about the prep work that went into preparing the costume and the skit itself?

Thank you so much ^//^

Well for my outfit I went and looked up possible patterns (these were extremely hard to find) and went through the patterns I have, I first made 2 mock ups of different patterns I have, but both failed miserably. So I made the entire dress pattern from scratch. My biggest challenge was definitely the odd shape off the dress but I am pretty happy with what I achieved. In the end this outfit was super fun to make. ^_^

The skit prep was pretty straight forward, the outfit had a dance that went with it thanks to the Idolm@ster game so I just set about learning the dance, the dance was definitely my favourite part though because I love performing <3

Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of cosplaying? If yes, please tell us more about it

Not really, I use to jump from one hobby to the next and could never stick to one but I am proud to say I have been cosplaying for 3 and a half years now and am still going on ^_^

Wig or no wig – which do you prefer and why?

Definitely wig, I prefer wig cause it just has more volume then my own hair does (I have used my own hair before). Wigs can also be styled easier and all the pretty colours!

What is the one thing that you try and avoid when making a new costume?

Crafting, so working with clay, paint or craft foam I try and avoid. I’ve managed to find my way around the sewing machine but I know myself enough to know I am in no way artistic ^_^

We all know that cosplay has been become a very expensive hobby these days, do you have hints or tips for other cosplayers as far as cutting down expenses etc. are concerned?

Make mock-up’s first out of cheap material like lining, don’t cut your expensive material straight away because if you mess up there is no going back. I make mock up’s for everything I make

Every Cosplayer has a favourite part of creating a costume or something they are really good at, what is yours?

Mmm, I love the entire process really. I love seeing the costume come together, and sewing it down; and of course countless fittings to make sure it’s right. I’m also not really all that great at anything but I take pride in my pleated skirts :3

Tell us about your most epic fail ever, whilst crafting a cosplay costume

My epic fail was definitely my Sailor Moon leotard, while cutting it I was so scared it would be too small and I kept telling myself it was too small so I sewed it down, put it on and what do you know it was twice my size, LOOOL! I felt so silly and kept slowly taking it in as not to make it too small that it sat awkwardly on my person.

Which character do you consider to be your Holy Grail of Cosplays?

This may come as a shock to most but it’s actually Ryuk from Death Note (gasp it’s not a magical girl XD) Ryuk was the only character I liked it in Death Note and I would really love to one day do a great cosplay of him, but not any time soon I’m afraid XD

South Africa’s convention scene has been growing leaps and bounds over the last couple of years. Do you have any tips for the other cosplayers as to how to stay comfortable throughout the day?

Firstly try and make your cosplay seasonally appropriate and try and make your outfit as comfortable as possible or you will be miserable at the con

Which international con would you really love to go to and why?

Miku Expo, because well it’s Miku, LOL

My favourite anime/manga is

Dragon Ball Z

Sailor Moon

Fullmetal Alchemist

Or another title we didn’t mention?

Sailor Moon!!

Why do you like this particular title? I am a magical girl fanatic, but really it’s because I’m just waiting for Luna to bring my crescent wand and compact so that I can rights wrongs and triumph evil in the name of the Moon

My favourite platform to watch or experience my favourite titles is

TV Series

Comic books

TV Series

Complete the sentence: I want to run after him and tell him that……
