We’ve come to the end of an extremely busy and awesome year, and I would like to take the opportunity to thank all our Cosplayers and supporters for their support during 2017. Without you guys GES Cosplay and Events will not exist so we are extremely thankful for everyone…

Our December Cosplayer of the Month is Nicole from RedHead Cosplay. Her cosplays always feature beautiful redheads and I was excited to get to know her a bit better….

Hi there Nicole!! Tell us a bit more about the person behind the cosplay persona?

Well, I was teased relentlessly for having red hair in school. I’d come home crying wondering why I was being targeted for something as silly as having red hair. After matriculating I realized that I should love myself for being unique. I also realized how many kick ass female characters were designed having red hair. I then decided that I want to empower myself and others by cosplaying these characters. I wanted to show how many sexy, awesome, strong redheads there are and embody those women. I then started cosplaying with the focus of cosplaying redheads and I haven’t looked back.

How and when did you get started in Cosplay and why do you enjoy it?

It began after going to the Medieval Fayre. I donned a cape and thought it was awesome. When I got home, before I thought everything through, I messaged cosplay SA saying I wanted to cosplay Windranger at rAge 2014. After that message I committed publicly so it forced me to follow through. Kinpatsu Cosplay and Kombo Kitten Online were cosplaying other characters from dota2 and welcomed me into the community, giving me tons of advice. When I arrived at rAge in my cosplay, I found not only the building process fun and challenging but the wearing of the cosplay fun and challenging too haha. I was hooked.

Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of cosplaying?

I love reading and I’m a writer as well. Though I usually don’t that people that I write.

What was the first Costume you wore for Cosplay and did you make it yourself?

Windranger from Dota 2 and yes. But my grandmother, mother and aunt did help with the sewing (I needed it!)

What type of genre is your favorite to Cosplay, and why?

Uhhhh, this is hard. I love video game cosplays because I love all the armor and weapons I get to make. But iconic cartoons come a close second because it evokes some nostalgia and many people recognize the cartoons.

Every Cosplayer has a favourite part of creating a costume or something they are really good at, what is yours?

The painting process. I love the painting. That’s when you can see everything coming together.

What is your most difficult challenge in creating a costume?

Sewing. I’m really not good and sewing but I am trying to improve

Tell us about your most epic fail ever whilst creating a costume

I created 3 mermaid tails when I only needed one because I realized after making the entire tail in silicon that i brought silicon that couldn’t be painted. Then I couldn’t buy fabric paint in the right color so I had to remake the tail a third time using the color the tail needed to be with the clear silicon over it

Which character do you consider to be your Holy Grail of cosplays?

Oooh there are so many… Mystique from the X Men films. Jessica Rabbit from Who Framed Rodger Rabbit… Poison Ivy – who I actually need to make a plan to cosplay but haven’t. The iconic redheads pretty much.

South Africa’s convention scene has been growing leaps and bounds over the last couple of years. What improvements do you think can be made to these events, as far as cosplay is concerned?

I love the mending kit they’ve added recently. A chill area for cosplayers would also be nice. A safe space to remove some items without having photos taken of the incomplete or falling apart cosplay.

Costume crafting can be really hard sometimes, right? Do you have any scars from cosplay related injuries and how did you get them?

I always have burns from my heat gun and my glue gun. Luckily no permanent scars…yet.

You can only choose one – Marvel or DC?

DC

Who’s your favorite character and why?

Superman and because I grew up watching Superman.

If you could be any of the superheroes, which one would you be and why?

Poison Ivy because she’s strong, sexy and who wouldn’t want to be able to control plants?

Your weapon of choice in a zombie apocalypse – Light sabre or Sonic Screwdriver

Light sabre

Why is this your weapon of choice?

I’m a huge Star Wars fan. And light sabres can slice off body parts efficiently without a mess haha.
