CCCT x Fancon Regional Championships of Cosplay Competition 2023

Capetonians! Dust off your superhero costumes, review your wish list of collectables and get your gaming on – Comic Con Cape Town in partnership with FanCon is headed your way!

A four-day fun-filled festival featuring a large range of pop culture and entertainment elements across virtually all genres, including international and local Comic Artists, Film and TV celebrities, and Cosplay championships. There is something for everyone to enjoy, whether you are a casual fan or a bona fide geek. We are passionate about developing local fandoms, services and pop culture.

Superhero or sidekick – there are exciting activations to enjoy that include professional gaming tournaments, other gaming activations, cosplay competitions, and new movie and series promotions. Comic-Con Cape Town x Fancon visitors can also enjoy celebrity panel discussions, seminars, workshops, and autograph sessions.

Comic-Con Cape Town x Fancon Regional Championships of Cosplay Competition is the highlight of Comic-Con Cape Town x Fancon cosplay activities. The 2023 overall winner of this regional championship gets sponsored by Comic-Con Cape Town to go through to the Comic Con Africa Championships of Cosplay finals which will be hosted at Comic Con Africa in September 2023.

Comic Con Cape Town will take place on 27 – 30 April 2023 at CTICC2, Cape Town.

The Judges for Comic Con Africa Casual Cosplay and Kidscon Cosplay Competition has been revealed!

We are excited to announce the Comic-Con Africa Casual Cosplay Competition and Kidscon Cosplay Competition judges!

First up we have the stunning Avelyn Swan!

Avelyn Swan has been cosplaying since 2016 and has taken part in several competitions over the years, most recently winning the Cosplay Cape Town Holloweenification contest in November 2020. She likes to cosplay strong female characters and hopes to inspire others to take the leap and start cosplaying.

Next we have the spectacular Just Plain Chris!

If you were to ask me why Chris why he enjoys cosplay, He’d have two answers. Firstly, he absolutely loves how his cosplays make people smile. It’s a priceless thing to experience – feeling like he has made a small difference to someone in that moment. Secondly, he wouldn’t regard himself as a very artistic or creative person, so cosplay helps him grow and develop in that regard. It continuously takes Chris out of his comfort zone by forcing him to learn new things that he may have little natural aptitude for. Chris feels it keeps his mind and soul young. He is personally drawn to stereotypical hero-types so most of Chris’ cosplays are usually related to that in some way. He finds this type of character very inspirational because they always seem to do the right thing under difficult circumstances. He also enjoys cosplaying characters that have more of a physical element to them – that require him to show my physique – because this allows him to combine his passion for physical fitness with cosplay.

Lastly, we have the talented Princess Maggie!

Princess Maggie is a cosplayer, entertainer, actress, events coordinator, seamstress, singer and interior designer with a passion for children’s characters and bringing magic to the world.

She is the founder and fairy godmother at Princess Maggie’s Party Experiences – Gauteng’s premier character entertainment company and Princess Maggie’s Fairytale Cottage – a immersive royal themed kids venue in Midrand. (https://www.princessmaggies.com/)

These three (3) awesome judges will be judging the daily Casual Cosplay Competition, where we encourage cosplayers from all skill levels to enter. Cosplay that has been bought, handmade, rented, commissioned or that are just closest cosplays are all welcome in this competition. Contestants will sign up on the day free of charge at Cosplay Central, and then will need to be at the main stage at 12:00 for the competition. How its works is that the contestants’ names will be read out by DJ Elliot and the contestant will walk across the stage and strike a pose. After all, contestants have done their walk, the judges will pick a winner. The Kidscon Cosplay competition works, in the same way, expect that contestants will sign up on the day free of charge at the cosplay booth in Kidscons and will need to be at the Kidscon stage at 11:00. Both competitions will be happening daily across all four (4) days of Comic-Con Africa!

Comic Con Africa Championship of Cosplay 2022 Entries are open!

The Champions of Cosplay is the main cosplay competition that takes place annually at Comic Con Africa. There are two other competitions taking place daily: Kidscon Casual Cosplay Competition and Comic Con Africa casual Cosplay Competition.
The first Comic Con Africa Championship of Cosplay took place in 2018 where Kinpatsu Cosplay took the title with her Sister of Battle, in 2019 Jinxie Cosplay won with her Bathory Blood Priestess, and then in 2020 Jessie Jestar won the online Competition with her Sister of Battle.

What makes the Comic Con Africa Championship of Cosplay such a unique competition is that the winner gets to represent Africa at the Cosplay Central Crown Championships of Cosplay where they compete against other top cosplayers from across the world. Kinpatsu Cosplay represented Africa at C2E2 in 2019 and come 2nd overall. In 2020 Jinxie Cosplay represented Africa at C2E2 and came 1st overall winning the title Crown Champion of Cosplay.

This year’s winner will represent Africa at MCM London Comic Con 2021 in the Cosplay Central Crown Championship of Cosplay. The winner will receive sponsored flights and accommodation from Comic Con Africa and go straight into the finals at MCM London and will compete against other top cosplayers from across the world.

Disney+ Confirmed to launch into 42 Countries, Including South Africa

The wait is finally over! Sometime this Winter(Summer in Europe) we will finally be getting Disney+ in South Africa! Disney+ Launched in America on the 12th of November 2019 with a big slate of content that we here in SA could just dream of watching. However, the below news(check out the official press release) gives us high hopes for watching The Mandalorian and all the new content soon. There isn’t any mention of pricing yet, but we can expect that to come in the coming months.

Johannesburg, South Africa (26 January 2022) – Disney+, the streaming service from The Walt Disney Company, confirmed that this winter it will launch in 42 countries and 11 new territories*. New countries include South Africa, Turkey, Poland and the United Arab Emirates.

With exclusive original content and thousands of episodes and movies from Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, National Geographic and general entertainment from Star, Disney+ is the streaming home for some of the world’s most beloved stories.
