We had the opportunity to play with ASUS new Z370 based ROG Maximus X Apex motherboard, a board that seems to be the brainchild of a mad overclocker! The ASUS ROG brand has always been gamer focused and the ROG Maximus X Apex is no exception to the rule. Sitting just below its big brother the ROG Maximus X Formula and coming in price wise at R6500. The first thing that I noticed about the board when I took it out of its box is, that there are notches cut into the board…the board almost looks like an X.

The Maximus X Apex features Aura Sync(and not just with the 4 pin header on the board), on the whole board! There is LED’s mounted under the board, the two heat spreaders and on two separate plates(one that is completely customizable). This is a modder and RGB fan’s dream motherboard!

The board also features a small metric ton of overclocking features! From onboard post leds to safe boot buttons. There are even condensation detection features, this is all in your favour if you are an overclocker. The ROG Maximus X Apex even help break the world overclocking record, coming in at 7.3GHz on all 6 of the Intel i7-8700K CPU!

Another cool feature that I liked is the ROG DIMM.2 slot. Your M.2 drives(2 of them) get mounted on a module that connects with your DDR4 interface(also it really looks cool and keeps the board nice and clean). Cooling would also not be a problem then for the M.2 drives as you can connect a fan over the units(and we know how hot M.2’s can get). The only drawback that I can see with this design is that you can only go up to 32GB of Ram, as you only have two slots that you can use. They also say that the LAN port on the Maximus X Apex can reach up to 5Gbps! This is one feature that I could not test as my router wasn’t fast enough.

The ROG Maximus X Apex features also ASUS world renowned SupremeFX audio, a 3year local warranty and enough USB connections to last you a lifetime!

So for whom is this board then actually made for? Well, I would say it is made more for you’re aspiring overclocker and high-end gamer, I would also recommend it to them. Overall I am impressed with the board and I really love the X design of the PCB. I also think it would really make a good centrepiece of a custom build(I am thinking, lots of water cooling and RGB lighting). This is your local mad scientist signing out….time to go rob a bank, I need this board
