The lovely folks over at Acer South Africa sent us the new Acer Predator Triton 900 To Review. This is probably the most powerful laptop i have ever had the pleasure of playing on….

When i first saw the Triton 900 i was concerned about using it as a daily laptop and how it would benefit the average gamer. At 4KG’s in weight and a 17.3″ Screen this laptop is anything but small and thin. A couple of weeks of use with it completely changed my view

It has a 4K 17.3 Inch screen that’s on CNC Machined Steel Hinges, Allowing you to Rotate the screen as you wish.

The specific Model i got to Review Contains the Intel Core i7-8750H processor, 2X 512 NVMe PCIe in Raid 0, An RTX 2080 And has 32GB Ram. All of this makes for an amazing gaming laptop that was able to handle literally any games thrown at it. I also ran the new 3D Mark DLSS Tests on it, as well as Time Spy DX12 Benchmark on it. The results were surprising.

When using it in real world gaming the newest AAA Games will easily run at 80 to 120fps in 1080P.
When in 4K The drops are fairly noticeable, i tried Shadow of the tomb raider, Far Cry 5 and Battlefield V and they all seemed to run around 40FPS. Still not bad to run and game on.

I’d happily trade in my own desktop to own one of these, However there are a couple of things i do not like about this laptop.

The only problem with gaming is the battery life on this laptop, When gaming it lasts around An hour and a half on battery. So it really is a Juice Hungry laptop. The power brick is also Massive at 300W and probably also weighs over 1KG. Thats alot to lug around.

Firstly, With those specs you’d easily be able to run most games comfortably at 144Hz, The laptops refresh rate? 60hz.. I’m not too sure why Acer focused on a 4K 60hz Touch screen rather than loose the touch and opt for a higher refresh rate on a beast like this. I’m fairly certain most gamers would opt for higher refresh rate over a touch screen.

Secondly. The keyboard. The mechanical keyboard looks and feels great. The RGB Keys can be individually lit and i loved the presets that come with predator sense. But, yes there is a but.. they added a vertical Trackpad to the laptop which can be really tough to use. They also completely left out the wrist rest.. That’s a bit of a deal breaker if you don’t want to use your own peripherals on this Laptop. Especially as long gaming sessions with no wrist rest do quite a number on your hands.

All in all, i do recommend this laptop to any gamer willing to invest in a Laptop like this over a gaming desktop, However, Do bring your own peripherals.. Mouse,Keyboard and maybe a High Refresh Rate 4k Screen.
