The Skylanders series is a “Toys to Life” genre game and the most successful one so far. If you do not know what it means then fear not, this guide will teach you everything you need to know to jump into the series.
History of Genre
Toys to Life games use physical figurines/action figures to interact with the game. The toy has a NFC (Near field communication) chip inside that it uses to communicate to the game. The games usually use a portal where the figures need to be placed on fir the communication to commence. Data can also be written back to most of the toys so save level progress or character specific options. This in return allow players to take their figure and use it on other portals, maybe at a friend’s house, so that they can play with their own character.
U.B. Funkeys was the first Toys to Life game, it was released in 2007. The game was released on PC and mainly in the US. Little did they know that they would spawn some great games to come out of the new “Toys to Life” genre. Skylander followed after U.B. Funkeys in 2011 and is still going strong. Other Toys to life games include Disney Infinity (Now Discontinued), Lego Dimensions and Nintendo’s Amiibo figurines.
Where to Start
So now you know a little history of the Toys to life genre and roughly how it works. Because if the success of Skylanders and all the different versions, people can easily feel overwhelmed and not sure where to begin. So this is exactly why I am writing this article, the great thing with the Skylanders series is that you can start anywhere. It is obviously better to start with the latest instalment, but nothing stops you from going back and trying the old games as well.
The only things to note are the following:
- Any Skylander figurines will work on new portals
- New Figurines will not work in old games
- The Spyro’s Adventure and Giants portals are interchangeable, and will work with Superchargers.
- The Swap Force portal is backwards compatible, and also compatible with Superchargers.
- The Traptanium Portal from Trap Team is backwards compatible, compatible with Superchargers as well.
- The Superchargers portal does not work with Trap Team, but will work in games before that.
- XBox Portals will only work on Xbox
- PS/Nintendo portals are interchangeable
If this confuses you, just check out the handle table this website did http://skylanderscharacterlist.com/getting-started/portal-compatibility/
So to sum it up, get the latest game but don’t be afraid to look at the other games as each instalment offers something exciting e.g. Superchargers have vehicles, Giants have Giants characters, Trap Team has Trap crystals and let’s not forget the latest in the series, Imaginators has Creation Crystals where you can create your own characters.
Starting your Adventure in Imaginators
There are 3 Starter packs to choose form for Imaginators, depending on what console you want to play and how much you want to spend will influence this decisions, if you want to see more info on the started packs just check here http://skylanderscharacterlist.com/all-your-starter-pack-options-for-skylanders-imaginators/
The game is easy to learn and will teach you all the basics you will need, the one thing you will have to decide on though is the battle class you want to use for your creation crystal/s as this cannot be changed at a later stage, except if you follow some un-official ways to reset your creation crystal.
The great thing with most of the Toys to Life games is that you do not need specific characters to complete the game but different characters will open extra missions and places. With Imaginators, Battle Classes and Elements are the most important when deciding what figurines to buy and what characters to create with creation crystals. Certain areas and missions can only be opened by a certain battle class or element and some of them you also need a Sensei. Sensei’s are the main figurines in Imaginators, in the story they are there to teach the creation characters and show them the way.
Kaos (The Evil Dude in Skylanders) discovers the ancient power of Mind Magic, which was used to create Skylands. Kaos uses this magic to create new villains called Doomlanders. In return, Portal Masters create Imaginators with their own imagination, they will be trained by the Senseis, who are powerful class masters sent by Eon. Everyone will need to work together to bring Kaos and the Doomlanders down and save Skylands.
Skylanders is a great game to get in to and as you can gather from this article you can start anywhere, so don’t feel intimidated or confused on what to get or where to get started. The best advice form me will be to start with imaginator’s and go from there. So, add it to your wish list or send some hints on what you will want in your xmas sleeves this year!
