Although I reviewed XCOM 2 before, I decided that I need to review the game again when it is released on console. And now the time has finally come, XCOM 2 on PS4!
Read my PC review here
This review will be shorter than the PC one as there I would’ve talked more about the game overall, here however I will try and concentrate more on the console version.
It’s been 20 years since the events of Enemy Unknown and XCOM lost the war against the invasion. Advent now rules the populace and there are some seriously bad things going on behind the scenes. You have to lead a small resistance with your mobile base the Avenger to try and take back our planet.
On the console version not much has changed, some bugs were addressed but no real big changes to the core. Compared to XCOM Enemy Within, XCOM 2 runs a lot smoother and easier to control. The game looks awesome and customizing your soldiers to look like friends or people you know can be tons of fun.
One thing that I didn’t like on the PC version was long loading times, and my thought was that it could’ve been my PC specs, but even on the console the loading times can take a long time. Loading missions sometimes aren’t too bad but load up a save game and you might as well go make a cup of coffee. For me the loading time is still worth playing the game but for some people it might irate completely.
In the actual gameplay there are still minor graphic glitches and lags which I hope they would address with the console version. The game is so much fun and you can easily forgive a glitch or two but having over 6 months after the PC release, things could have been fixed.
The game is a turned-based game and so will not appeal to everyone but in my opinion everyone should at least try out XCOM, and so far XCOM 2 is the best one in the series. The whole idea of you not being on the defence and rather on the offence is a brilliant turn of events and makes for some interesting decisions you need to make.
The XCOM series will always be one of my favourites and XCOM 2 has earned its place there for me, yes it does have glitches and loading times can take forever but it is a genre I fully enjoy and we do not get a lot of good titles in this genre. See you out on the field COMMANDER!
