What would you do if your mom’s new boyfriend is a real bully and your are stuck with him the whole summer on vacation….except pouting alot you join the local water park and its rag tag group of staff members. Duncan(Liam James) is forced to join his mom Pam(Toni Collette), her boyfriend Trent(Steve Carell) and Trent’s daughter Steph(Zoe Levin) for what is to be a nice holiday at a small vacation home in Cape Cod. Duncan’s mom doesn’t know that Trent emotionally bully’s him and is making his life a living hell, what also doesn’t help is that Duncan is a 14 year old moody teenager. Duncan soon find new friends at the local Water Wizz by befriending the owner at the pizza pallor. Summer just became the best ever! When I first got this movie I thought it would be like your regular Art nouveau, but after popping it in to the dvd player and watching it I can see why it is getting all the accolades and award nominations. It is a journey that a lot of kids go though all over the world, lucky our friend Duncan made awesome buddy’s to get him through it. This is also another side of Steve Carell that comes out in the film. The framing and photography of the shots is just beautifully done, and the locations just pop out for me. The sound track is also really good and if you are a soundtrack junkie then I would recommend getting the soundtrack. The acting is above to what I expected and you do feel for the characters. The only thing that I would think is sort of a dislike is the constant moody face of Duncan, which can be corrected by a good hiding as not even I spoke that way to my mom. Overall I would really recommend this movie to every one as it is really enjoyable. This is your Local Mad Scientist signing out…..
