When you mention dying a lot in a game then people usually think Dark Souls, now another game can be added to this line, The Surge. A new IP game from Deck 13 and Focus.
Set in a Sci-fi, technology advanced future setting it is quite different to Dark Souls. The game is also inspired by Rise of the Robots that came out in 1994. The Surge has borrowed some cool Cybernetic elements.
The game is an Action type RPG with a hardcore experience, focusing on challenging, visceral melee combat. The system, gameplay, looting and character progression is unique and fresh but does feel that it can lack some depth. Your character gets fitted with and exo-suit but things go sour and you get thrown away with the rubble.
All of a sudden, your character wakes and confusion sets in. The journey then starts, trying to figure out what happened. Getting better cybernetic implants along the way to become stronger and upgrade gear and equipment is key to survive and beat tough opponents trying to stop you in your journey.
The Story is good and interesting and I want to find out how it ends but for some reason I cannot hold my attention to it. I’m not sure if it is because I’m not a fan of dying over and over or if the story narrative is set to far apart.
The game looks good for a smaller game as it was only 16GB to download, the sound and audio is ok but nothing to write home about. I didn’t find anything game breaking with the controls and it is quite a unique setup that can be changed.
The Surge is a very interesting Title and worth taking a closer look at but be aware that you will die and if you’ve played any of the Soul series games before then you will understand that it is not for everyone.
A cool new IP, interesting in its own right but time will tell if it will succeed to be a successful game in this genre.
