A Headset is a critical part of your gaming arsenal, especially if you are playing in an area where other people are also present. Today we look at the Plantronics GameCom 818 Wireless Headset.
Now you might ask who Plantronics is. Plantronics is probably one of the oldest headset companies around, the company was established in 1961 and they made the first headsets for NASA. Their products are used everywhere just take a look at this paragraph taken from their website:
“From the day two airline pilots working in a garage set out to invent a new kind of aviation headset until today, we have considered breakthroughs in audio technology as our daily business. We pioneered the lightweight headset, the mobile headset, noise-cancelling technology and the personal speakerphone, always driven by a single obsession: remove the barriers to simply smarter communications.”
Only recently have they actually started to take on the giant gaming industry and we were blessed this year to have them present at rAge, just check this out. I was really excited to test out one of their headsets and I have to say that I was quite impressed.
The GameCom 818 is a wireless USB stereo headset that you can use with PS4, PC and Mac. It takes 4 hours to fully charge but you can still use the unit while charging. At full charge the battery will last up to 10 hours with a range of up to 12 meters.
At first glance that headset looks professional but looking closer you might think that the earcup size looks too small. This however is done for comfort, usually my ears get quite tender when I play with a headset but to a shocking surprize my ears didn’t give me one problem while wearing this headset. The design of the headset is made to work without gaming interruption. If you want to use the mic, you just shift it downwards and presto. Volume control is always an issue with headsets but with the GameCom 818 it is probably one of the easiest things to control. The controls sits on the outside of the left earcup and feel very natural to control. It is amazing how this little change from the standard, control buttons on the wire, makes a difference.
Below are some specs:
|Sony PlayStation 4||Yes|
|Battery Power||Up to 10 hours of use (4 hours = fully charged)|
|Wireless Range||Up to 40ft/12m from USB wireless transceiver|
|Noise-cancellation||Flexible, noise-canceling microphone|
In the box you get the headset with mic, USB dongle for connection and a USB cable for charging. Nothing spectacular about the contents of the box so it would’ve been nice to get a little something extra.
The Plantronics GameCom 818 is a worthy competitor to the best headsets on the market. I didn’t receive any local pricing yet but can see that it goes for around $80 which is not bad at all, especially for a wireless headset. If you are looking for a great stereo wireless headset that is compatible with most of your gaming systems then look no further. Comfort at its best!
