Major League Baseball, and American past time but that doesn’t mean that the rest of us can also enjoy it.
I’ve always been intrigued by Baseball, the skill of hitting a ball with a round bat and then the awesomeness of hitting that Home Run! When I started writing this review, I started to think “I wonder where Baseball comes from?” and to my surprise it did not originate in America. Some think that Baseball originated from France with games like la soule, thèque, la balle au bâton, and la balle empoisonnée. Others believ that it originates from England from Rounders or stoolball. Who knows what the truth is but we do know that the modern game of Baseball comes from a guy named Alexander Cartwright in 1845 in New York City.
So, with the little history lesson out of the way let’s get down to MLB The Show 17. I haven’t played a Baseball video game in a while and I must say that I am impressed with the progress they have made. This game is full of choices on what to do, things to look at and ways to play the game.
The games modes are vast, Road to the Show 17 (campaign mode), Diamond Dynasty, Franchise, Retro Mode and more. In the campaign you now have some cutscenes with dialogue options to customise your experience. Retro mode is inspired by 90’s video games and is just a fun mode to enjoy. In Franchise, you own the team and make the difficult decisions, take them to glory or burn into ashes. Diamond Dynasty is another returning favourite where you build your team using trading cards. Earn more cards by winning and playing games or accomplishing missions or goals.
What is a new version of a game if not for new features. One of the best new features for MLB 17 is Retro mode, kick it old school with some flair. There are some massive improvements done to the Diamond Dynasty mode to make it even bigger and more dynamic.
The game looks great although there is more room for improvement, I was impressed with the tutorial and on how you can customise the controls to suit your needs. Base running is quite tricky especially when you want to steal some bases. Online multiplayer is not bad and even with the more involved matchmaking in Diamond Dynasty.
MLB The Show 17 is a fully rounded sports game and shows tons of improvement and some great potential for growth going forward. I Loved playing baseball and getting some big hits over the wall.
