Attention residents of Super Earth! Become a hero of the federation today, and join the Helldivers! In order to protect your loved ones and spread democracy across the universe, and let us not forget the thrill of being able to explore the galaxy and encounter “exotic” lifeforms. Don’t delay, enlist today!

Helldivers, developed by Arrowhead Game Studios, is an intense top-down cooperative twin-stick shooter set in the future where the Earth has been renamed Super Earth as a result of not only its furthered technology, but also its “improved” democracy, where it is more than just a way of electing a government, which every inhabitant of Super Earth supports in full without even really acknowledging what it truly means.

Super Earth is at war on all sides with three alien races; The Illuminates, The Bugs, The Cyborgs. Each presenting their own unique challenges and effect on the galaxy map. The Helldivers are responsible for fighting the war against these aliens, while also retrieving technology and activating oil-pumps.

There is a leveling system that unlocks better weapons and advanced warfare termed Stratagems, as well as higher threat-level planets and missions with harder-to-kill enemies or bigger waves of said foes. The current leveling cap is at 50 and is talk that it may be increased if Arrowhead plans on releasing more content.

Helldivers can be played single-player, co-operative, or local co-operative thanks to a Matchmaking “station” at the rear of your ship’s Bridge where you can respond to the emergency calls of other players in the Community, be it Steam or PSN. The player limit for these missions are 1-4 players. You can even play completely locally by having multiple controllers connected to the platform you have the game installed on and then pressing the “Join” button when it appears. After selecting a mission, players can select where they want to drop their pods on the mission map. Once landed, the players can fight their way through or sneak through enemy territory to complete a series of objectives, and then called down an Escape Shuttle to escape further swarms of enemies. Helldivers features full “friendly-fire”, where you can “accidentally” kill your friends! Although I won’t recommend that, depending on the mission difficulty… You can play the game offline as well, with 1-4 local players. The mission progress will however not contribute to the “global Galactic Campaign”.

Helldivers is an intense but really fun game. The twin-stick control mechanics are fun to play with and not awkward with the setting of the missions, even on PC. The controls are simple but demands a bit of extra effort in order to successfully complete the mission. Become a legend today! Just beware that training robot…

About Michael du Plessis

My favourite gaming genres are Survival Horror, Indie and RPGMaker, RPG, MMO and MOBA/RTS based games, especially if there is a good story behind it all. I started out in the Geek world by being a Spiderman fan from a very young age already, and then started gaming on PlayStation and a PC not long afterward. The first games I remember playing are Crash Bandicoot, Spyro, and even Spiderman! I then started getting a taste for Survival Horror on PC by playing Aliens vs. Predator 2. Since then the bug bit me. My favourite Survival Horrors include Amnesia, Outlast, Dead Space, and Five Nights and Freddy's. I'm a fan of cosplaying and started cosplaying in 2015 at Smallville Comics' opening of their 2nd store. I've been a huge fan of anime since an early age, and my favourite shows include Fairy Tail, Bleach, Naruto, and most recently; Tokyo Ghoul. I started doing Let's Plays as a hobby in 2013 and am happy to be able to continue with this passion with you guys!
