Hi to all the Cosplayers! In this last month in the run up to rAge Expo 2016 we are featuring the queen of making it look easy – Teri Ferreira. Teri caught our eye with her gorgeous Disney inspired cosplays and we wanted to find out a bit more about this stunning lady…..
Hi Teri! Tell us a bit more about the person/people behind the cosplay persona?
I’m a Sensei (Karate Instructor) and part-time artist. But I’m also a wife and a mom so cosplay is something my family can enjoy together BUT my cosplays have to be as frugal as possible! And being born on Halloween, dressing up is in my blood.
How and when did you get started in Cosplay and why do you enjoy it?
I’ve always been cosplaying as long as I can remember but I started going to conventions when I moved to Johannesburg in 2014 and my brother invited me to rAge. I enjoy it because it’s a chance to be creative, play dress up, escape in a crazy world of fandom and fun and meet likeminded creative souls.
Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of cosplaying? If yes, please tell us more about it
I teach Karate and I’m also a sketch artist. I dabble in baking. I LOVE crafting. And I love all nerdy things. Harry Potter, Marvel Universe, comics….and I have a proud Nordic heritage.
Wig or no wig – which do you prefer and why?
No wig. Wigs are lovely but its way more comfy without. I’m all about being comfy.
What is the one thing that you try and avoid when making a new costume?
Only one thing? Spending money.
We all know that cosplay has been become a very expensive hobby these days, do you have hints or tips for other cosplayers as far as cutting down expenses etc. are concerned?
Have a budget and stick to it!!!! Make it work. Try and be creative in order to meet your budget. And try to recycle things around the home or in your closet. I’ve turned old back packs into gun holsters and used zips and studs from old bags. There are plenty of creative ways to be frugal when you have no money.
Every Cosplayer has a favourite part of creating a costume or something they are really good at, what is yours?
I’m really good at making costumes with very little money, recycling and finding things for a cheap price.
Tell us about your most epic fail ever, whilst crafting a cosplay costume
I once cosplayed Jessie from Toy Story and while tacking on the cow chaps to my jeans while wearing them (dunno why I did that) I realized that I had tacked them TO MY LEGS! Tried to take my pants off and was like, “Ow! …Qw?”
Which character do you consider to be your Holy Grail of cosplays?
Selene from Underworld.
South Africa’s convention scene has been growing leaps and bounds over the last couple of years. Do you have any tips for the other cosplayers as to how to stay comfortable throughout the day?
Always cos-test to make sure it’s comfortable to wear. Then on the day, stay hydrated (but if you don’t want to wee a lot, rather mix yourself a Rehydrate sachet), avoid junk food as they lack zinc and other things that help you with sustaining energy and can create intestinal discomfort. Sit whenever you get the opportunity.
Which international con would you really love to go to and why?
San Diego Comic-Con!
|Cosplayers Name||Teri Ferreira|
|Current home town||Johannesburg, Gauteng|
I am most like…..
Leonard Hofstadter / Sheldon Cooper / Howard Wolowitz / Raj Koothrappali
Why do you say that?
Because even though I can enjoy geeky things, I also don’t take it too seriously and stay pretty level headed.
Epic challenge – DC or Marvel?
Which comic book character is your favorite, and why?
Nope. Sorry. Too many favorites. All for very different reasons.
Complete the sentence: I was walking towards the Millennium Falcon when…… Luke stopped me and said, “May the Force be with you.” Then I got the Falcon and flew off to go kick some ass!
