Cosplayer Of The Month March 2016 | Cats Tail Cosplay (Jade Loader)

Now that we’ve all enjoyed our Easter breaks and we’ve come down from our sugar-high, it’s time to get back to the important things in life – our admiration of all things cosplay. This month we’re chatting to Jade Loader from Cat’s Tail Cosplay, and very appropriately so, as it’s her birthday month :) She’s a cosplayer who likes to cosplay from a wide variety of genres whether it’s anime, comics or movies and we’re excited to find out a bit more about what makes her tick…..

Hi there Jade!! Tell us a bit more about yourself and the person behind the cosplay persona?

I am a Geographer/Anthropologist/GIS technician during the day and nerd at night. I love to play games, watch anime, read manga and comics as well as sew. My biggest passion has to be my Monster High Doll collection.  I now have a total of 84 dolls and counting. I also have a weird obsession with maps

How and when did you get started in Cosplay and why do you enjoy it?

I got into cosplay in my honors year at university in 2013. In which I wrote a paper regarding gender roles within the geek/nerd community, it was during my research that I really started to understand cosplay. My boyfriend then started to show me pictures and videos on the internet and that is how I fell in love with it. It was only in 2014 that I got the chance to cosplay when I spoke to CaziBunni who encouraged me to cosplay. I then started sewing lessons and my cosplay debut was Numbuh 3 from KND at KINCON 2014. The rest is cosplay history

Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of cosplaying? If yes, please tell us more about it

As mentioned earlier I love collecting Monster High Dolls and I am a part of the South African Brony community as well :) These two areas are my escape when I am feeling down or stressed going to watch one of these shows or going onto the collectors forums or looking at pony pictures cheers me up. I also collect comics specifically the New 52 Harley Quinn and Suicide Squad ones. I am now trying to get back into reading as I use to be a huge bookworm

Wig or no wig – which do you prefer and why?

Definitely wig! I love wigs so much, I think it is because I have such thin hair that I can do nothing with, so wearing a wig allows me to have hair styles I can only dream of. If i could I would wear wigs all the time :) Though that does not mean I am against those who don’t wear wigs when they cosplay if you have the hair for it or just don’t feel like wearing a wig for that cosplay go for it :)

What is the one thing that you try and avoid when making a new costume?

Buying cheap fabric, I have recently learnt my lesson with this forcing me to now remake two of my cosplays from scratch as the one has laddered everywhere as the fabric is known to do that while the other I used the wrong fabric to what the fabric specified so I can’t move in the outfit very well. So I now will always buy the correct fabric and rather safe up then rush my cosplay.

We all know that cosplay has been become a very expensive hobby these days, do you have hints or tips for other cosplayers as far as cutting down expenses etc. are concerned?

I try to plan out all my cosplays for the year and print out the reference pictures. This way I can what fabric I will require for each section, I do this two to three times for each charterer then go to the fabric shop with a plan in mind as to how much I will need. The two places I still battle with budgeting is wigs and shoes. Wigs I try not to buy cheap ones of as I love wigs. With regards to shoes I nearly always buy them at the East Rand Traders Market or Bruma Oriental City as they are often cheaper there :)

Every Cosplayer has a favorite part of creating a costume or something they are really good at, what is yours?

Mine has to be trying on the different pieces of the cosplay as I make it to see it coming together. It also allows me to envision what the complete outfit is going to look like. Those who know me are often shown half-finished cosplays as I walk around the house in them showing them off as I can what the finished product is going to look like.

Tell us about your most epic fail ever, whilst crafting a cosplay costume

My most epic fail will have to be working on my Mileena from MKX as I somehow managed to sew right throw my pinky finger on my left hand while sewing her top. I decided to make her completely from vinyl and stretch leather to get the texture I wanted. Which proved to be very difficult. On that day the cosplay gods demanded blood from me. The cosplay turned out well though and is one of my favorites if not the most comfortable.

Which character do you consider to be your Holy Grail of cosplays?

That would have to be my Galadriel. It took me two months to make and has over seven meters of fabric on it. I normal love dwarves more than elves but she just spoke to me and I knew I had to cosplay her. It took me a month to find the perfect wig and with the help of FairyFountains I got the crown, ring and pendant perfect. I also feel I got some of my best pictures wearing her and I can’t wait to wear her to a con again.

South Africa’s convention scene has been growing leaps and bounds over the last couple of years. Do you have any tips for the other cosplayers as to how to stay comfortable throughout the day?

Try not to finish the cosplay the night before, I am super guilty of this but I am trying to stop. This will prevent you from not having time to fix certain aspects of the outfit. You can do a full test a few days before and practice your poses which will allow you to find any faults in the cosplay. Also you can never really enjoy a con if you are tired. Always get some rest before a con as it may not seem it but cosplay is exhausting.

Which international con would you really love to go to and why?

I am lucky enough to have gone to the winter Birmingham Comic Con so I can scratch a smaller comic con off my list. My next goal is going to London Comic Con and Katsucon for the cosplay. A con I just want to go to and enjoy (so no cosplay required) would have to be GamesCon and SDCC 🙂

I am most like…..

  • Sheldon Cooper
  • Leonard Hofstadter
  • Howard Wolowitz
  • Raj Koothrappali

Sheldon Cooper, Howard Wolowitz

Why do you say that?

I am like Sheldon Copper in the sense that I am a bit of a know it all and can be condescending (not my best traits) but unlike him I am learning to control it and am aware that you can’t be like that in normal society. Yet I am the most like Howard, I am a huge mommy’s girl, I am very loyal, and like him going into space I have problems realizing sometimes when people don’t want to hear about stuff I have done or have a.k.a my Monster High Dolls and my days in res

Complete the sentence: I was walking towards the spaceship when……

I was walking towards the spaceship when I saw a three headed monkey ;)

Which gaming platform do you prefer?

Playstation, XBox and PC

Which game is your favorite to play, and why?

Anything from the Kingdom Hearts series I have even gone as far as to collect all the games on the original platforms, I am just missing the Gameboy Advanced one now. As well as the new Tomb Raider by Square Enix I think I am on my fourth play through of that game :) But I am an all-rounder; I play on all platforms as long as the game is fun I don’t mind on what platform I play it on 🙂
