Our Cosplayer of the Month for July 2016 is Linda du Toit from Lynzaykat’s Crazy Adventures. Linda is not only a phenomenal Cosplayer but she’s also one of only a few local suppliers to the cosplay community, selling wigs and all sorts of addictive goodies via her online store. I absolutely loved her Katana cosplay from Icon 2016 and I’m really stoked that she agreed to let us into her cosplay mind so that we can learn a bit more about her and her cosplay adventures….
Hi Linda! Please tell us a bit more about the person behind the cosplay persona?
Um… I’m actually a rather shy person and apparently my “angry face syndrome” tends to scare people off, but I promise I don’t bite!
How and when did you get started in Cosplay and why do you enjoy it?
It was 2012 I think, when the then boyfriend (now husband) was into gaming and wanted to go to rAge. I later found out about cosplay and figured I’d give it a try. It was a fun experience for me to have so many people recognise and fan girl over my cosplay. I really enjoy it, because I get to be a different person in cosplay and learn new skills.
Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of cosplaying? If yes, please tell us more about it
I’ve always loved photography, but haven’t been any good at it. I am currently taking lessons though to try level up my skills and hopefully become a decent photographer one day. One day…
What was the first Costume you wore for Cosplay and did you make it yourself?
Classic Caitlyn from League of Legends. I made the hat and gun myself mostly from cardboard, and the dress my mom mostly sew, because she didn’t have the patience to teach me how to use her industrial machine.
What type of genre is your favourite to Cosplay, and why?
You’ll almost always see me cosplay from games or movies, because I am more of a gamer and movie-goer than Otaku. You’ll also see a lot of League of Legends cosplays simply because there are so many gorgeous skins and fan-arts, that one simply cannot resist. However, you can expect to see more anime-related cosplays in the future!
Every Cosplayer has a favourite part of creating a costume or something they are really good at, what is yours?
Props. Definitely props. I’m not any good at sewing yet, but I am getting lessons soon.
What is your most difficult challenge in creating a costume?
Usually attaching items and making sure they stay the whole day, and how to incorporate pockets into the cosplay.
Tell us about your most epic fail ever whilst creating a costume
Hahaha! Okay. This has to be Order of the Lotus Irelia. This is just a massive fail. The prop fell apart, because the parts were too heavy and the choice of glue was bad (because I hot glue everything), the outfit was shiny and cheap because of the wrong choice of material and the belt and leg guards were bleh, because I had never worked with craft foam before and didn’t ask for assistance. I really just winged it and you should NOT do that. Learn from my mistakes!
Which character do you consider to be your Holy Grail of cosplays?
I honestly don’t think I have one yet? I feel that there’s always room for improvement.
South Africa’s convention scene has been growing leaps and bounds over the last couple of years. What improvements do you think can be made to these events, as far as cosplay is concerned?
Perhaps to consider cosplayers more when event-planning? Like making sure there is enough room in the convention centre for the people to move around without getting hit by props and potentially break them.
Also, just making sure that all rules and regulations are posted for the public to see months before the con itself, so that cosplayers can make changes to their cosplays if necessary.
Costume crafting can be really hard sometimes, right? Do you have any scars from cosplay related injuries and how did you get them?
I try to be careful when crafting, after all the stories I’ve heard from other people, so I can proudly say I don’t have any scars yet! Although, I have sliced myself with a craft knife while cutting cardboard over my lap, and stabbed my palm with a hobby knife, because the lid was loose and I was being smart. Oh and I’m sure everyone’s been burnt by the hot glue gun before.
You head up a Facebook page especially aimed at helping out the n00bs to the cosplay community. Do you have any words of advice or hints & tips for newbie cosplayers?
Never be afraid to ask questions and to try new things! There will always be someone out there that either knows something about the topic or is willing to assist, plus there are also tons of YouTube videos on various crafting/ sewing tips and tricks.
It’s all just about taking the first step and trying things out for yourself, and if it doesn’t work, then you’ll know what not to do the next time you try again.

You can only choose one – DC or Marvel?
Who’s your favourite Marvel character and why?
Captain America! Because Iron Man is a bastard
If you could be any of the superheroes, which one would you be and why?
Probably Scarlet Witch or Mystique, because power to do things with your mind, and power to transform. How cool would either be?
Your weapon of choice in a zombie apocalypse – light sabre or sonic screwdriver
Why is this your weapon of choice?
Because of the awesome sound it makes!
