Now that the craziness of the GES rAge 2016 Cosplay Contest is over, it’s time for us to get back to our regular features and we’re diving head first into our Cosplayer of the Month for October 2016. This month we feature the lovely Kelsey Atkins from JinxKittie Cosplay, fresh from winning several awards at the rAge contest this year. Let’s see what makes Kelsey tick and if we can find out a bit more about this Durban based cosplayer…..

Hey there Kelsey! Tell us a bit more about the person behind the cosplay persona?

I guess I can be summed up with the words of one of my best friends: a small fireball of excitement and dedication! I am a Web and Graphic designer by profession, and just an all ’round geek! I am also super passionate about creative fields, like photography, art, sewing, and also cosplay! Hence why I’m here!

Other than that I am generally quite a shy person at first, but once you crack open the shell there’s no stopping me. I am also a vegetarian and cat obsessor!

How and when did you get started in Cosplay and why do you enjoy it?

I’ve always been a lover of sewing and crafting, and I’ve always loved the costumes in games, comics and TV shows, but I did not know about cosplay until about 2 years ago!

I started seriously cosplaying in 2015 after making my first (not very good) attempt at a basic cosplay at the end of 2014. I was obsessed with Game of Thrones and wanted to wear the dress Daenerys wore in Qarth… Upon looking up how to make such a dress I came across the world of cosplay, and the rest is history!

Congratulations on your awards received during the GES rAge 2016 Cosplay Contest! Can you tell us a bit more about your winning cosplay entry?

Thank you! Well, I’ve been dying to do a World of Warcraft cosplay for ages now, and when I heard about Noorie’s Deathwing plans I jumped in and decided to finally take on the challenge of bringing my favorite Dragon Lady to life! Alexstrasza is just beautiful and majestic, and there was no second thoughts about cosplaying her alongside Deathwing. It was the perfect opportunity!

I really started working hard on this cosplay in July and since then I poured over 200 hours into her making! I think the end result really paid off.

Do you have any hobbies or interests outside of cosplaying? If yes, please tell us more about it

Yes! I am also a gamer! When I’m not making cosplay stuff you’ll find me playing various action-packed games, reading epic books, or drawing cartoon doodles of cats, dragons, and other things!

Wig or no wig – which do you prefer and why?

In cosplay situations, definitely WIG! Because it’s always fun to have magnificent hair of course!

What is the one thing that you try and avoid when making a new costume?

I always try to avoid spending too much, I’d rather try be resourceful and reuse things, or recycle materials and stuff to  make parts for costumes rather than go out and buy a whole lot of new stuff.

Also, sanding. I hate sanding!

We all know that cosplay has been become a very expensive hobby these days, do you have hints or tips for other cosplayers as far as cutting down expenses etc. are concerned?

Yes! Try be inventive and resourceful when it comes to making parts for your cosplay! Think outside the box! Sometimes even the most random of things can be turned into something useful for a costume. And if you have any scraps that could even possibly be used for future costumes, keep them! I have boxes and tubs filled with scraps of fabric and foam, because I know I’ll use them up eventually (and I keep this in mind when choosing my next cosplays).

Every Cosplayer has a favorite part of creating a costume or something they are really good at, what is yours?

I really enjoy every process involved in cosplay making, but my favorite things are the sewing, armor building, and painting! And I think I’m pretty good at those!

Tell us about your most epic fail ever, whilst crafting a cosplay costume

This happened while I was making Alexstrasza: I thought I’d be smart and make the hand armor by gluing the armor pieces to the glove WHILE I WAS WEARING IT. The glue ended up soaking through the glove, effectively attaching both the armor and glove to my skin and leaving several nasty chemical burns when I finally managed to pull it off! And not to mention, the armor was on my right hand and my left hand is rather clumsy, and I struggled to get the thing off without damaging my work. Not a fun experience at all hahaha!

Which character do you consider to be your Holy Grail of cosplays?

But the one cosplay I keep putting off because I want to be able to make it perfectly, is the namesake for my cosplay alias: Jinx from League of Legends!

South Africa’s convention scene has been growing leaps and bounds over the last couple of years. Do you have any tips for the other cosplayers as to how to stay comfortable throughout the day?

Always test your cosplays way before the day of the event! This way you’ll see how comfortable it is, or if you need to change things to make it comfier to wear. Practice walking around, sitting, scratching your nose… Because the last thing you want to have to deal with is a hot, uncomfortable and limiting costume at an event that’s supposed to be fun!

Also try make sure your cosplay has some form of lining or ventilation/airflow, especially if it is made from foam.  Sweat + foam is so not comfortable hahaha

Aside from that, always make sure you have water close by, and snacks! It’s easy to forget to drink and then dehydration takes over!

Which international con would you really love to go to and why?

BlizzCon or San Diego Comic-Con! Those events are so big and so cosplay-packed that I can hardly imagine what they’re like! I’d love to one day be able to travel and join in the biggest cosplay events in the world, just for the experience!

Which gaming platform is your favorite out of the following – Playstation / Xbox / PC

Which game is your favorite to play, and why?

At the moment, it’s Fallout 4! It’s just so open ended and free and I love that you’re able to just roam around, build stuff, and shoot things in game without having a super-pressurizing plot line to follow

Complete the sentence:

I was running and running. When I finally came to a stop, I turned around and then I …….

…….. dropped all the cupcakes I stole. LOL!
