With news of NASA’s project to colonize Mars by the 2030s, movies likes these were inevitable in attempting to ride on the wave of NASA’s aims to extend human presence deeper into the solar system. Just like the “End of World in 2012, Doomsday” trend the movie uses the hype to market the movie instead of focusing on the execution to an otherwise great idea for a plot.
Captain William Stanaforth played by Mark Strong is on a one-way solo mission to take the first steps in colonizing Mars. Like all pioneers throughout history, Stanaforth will face insurmountable odds and life and death decisions as he rockets bravely through space.
Just before you criticize the plot as to why they would let a psychological unstable man, prone to fits of anger resulting in him bashing equipment, be captain of a spaceship on a crucial mission for humanity and let’s just remember we never asked that question in Star Wars The Force Awakens in terms of why Kylo Ren would be allowed to command the First Order.
The movie offers nothing new as a lone astronaut against all odds however Mark Strong acting ability really carries the movie with his portrayal of the unravelling space captain.
